‘The Trojan Women’ was originally based on the myths and legends about the Trojan War. A Tragedy centering on the horror of war and its aftermath. The play is as controversial, hard-hitting and provocative today as it was 2,492 years ago. Dealing with power, violence, degradation and the strength of the human spirit, The Trojan Women is as relevant today as it was back then. In today’s media culture of constant war and the destruction it leaves behind, it is ‘the ultimate play about collateral damage’ asking what is left when a war is ‘won’.
After a ten-year war, the city of Troy has fallen. The women of the royal household are rounded up by the invading army and imprisoned together in a single room to await their fate as spoils of war. In an uncomfortably intimate space filled with an air of danger and the unknown, the women struggle to understand what has happened, support one another, turn against each other, mourn for lost husbands and sons, recall bittersweet memories and speculate about their futures.
This brand new re-told adaptation of ‘The Trojan Women’ is to be as beautiful as it is harrowing and as grand as it is gritty.
